Cookies and Apples

Download: Casper and the Cookies--"Sid From Central Park"

What's that smell in the air? It's the smell of nepotism, my friends. You see, I'm roommates with Jason and Kay, scions of a band called Casper and the Cookies, who just so happened to release one of my favorite records of 2006, The Optimist's Club (the living with them thing came later, so I'm not THAT biased). It's an inventive, almost spastic (in the best possible way) power pop tour de hook (see above track...and don't kill me for saying "tour de hook") that careens from song to song with dangerous energy. Even the mellow songs and sound collages have verve. The band's live show is something else, a glittery and wild non-stop pop music push-and-pull.

I'm gonna be taking care of the cats and mouse-eating frog while Jason, Kay, and Co. hit the road with the hobbit-approved Apples in Stereo (a favorite here at The Cropper) who are touring behind their fantastic new record, New Magnetic Wonder, which features more piano bass than any other record ever, including the entire Todd Rundgren catalog.
